HISTORY AND AND BIOGRAPHY
APESEK GIRIMPUHWE is a Rwandan Non-Government Organization (NGO)
founded in 2002 in response to the devastating social and economic challenges
following the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi. This period left a profound impact on
Rwandan society, creating a significant population of orphans, widows, and disabled
persons.
The aftermath of the genocide was compounded by the return of former
refugees and a lack of adequate social services such as health and education. The
situation worsened with the spread of the HIV/AIDS pandemic, which left even more
children orphaned and vulnerable. In recognition of its efforts to address these issues, APESEK GIRIMPUHWE received
formal approval from the Rwanda Government Board in 2014, as published in the
Official Gazette No. 26 bis of June 30, 2014. The organization is based in Kivumu
Sector, Rutsiro District, Western Province, Rwanda, where it continues to serve
disadvantaged communities, especially child-headed households.
APESEK GIRIMPUHWE envisions a better life in a better world for all Rwandan
children, with a particular focus on orphans and other vulnerable children. Its mission
is to promote psychosocial well-being, empowering these children to live fulfilling
lives and ensuring they enjoy the same opportunities as other children in Rwanda.
The organization operates with a commitment to the core values of empathy,
compassion, inclusiveness, confidentiality, responsiveness, and respect.
The organization provides a range of support services aimed at addressing the
diverse needs of orphans and vulnerable children. These include: Housing and
Health Insurance, Access to Education, Socio-Economic and Psychological Support,
Reproductive Health Awareness and Mentor Mothers Program, One of the
organization's hallmark initiatives is the creation of a network of "mentor mothers."
These are women volunteers from the community who provide continuous care and
support for orphans and vulnerable children, ensuring they have access to basic
needs.
APESEK GIRIMPUHWE’s strategic plan emphasizes the rehabilitation and
reintegration of drug-abusing youth, which has emerged as a growing concern in
Rwanda. By focusing on youth rehabilitation, the organization aims to offer young
people a second chance at life through psychosocial support, vocational training, and
community integration.
Since its inception, APESEK GIRIMPUHWE has made significant strides in
improving the lives of orphans, vulnerable children, and disadvantaged families in
Western Rwanda. The NGO continues to work towards creating a society where
every child can thrive regardless of their circumstances. Going forward, it seeks to
expand its reach, enhance its programs, and adapt to the evolving needs of the
communities it serves, particularly in addressing issues like substance abuse among
the youth and promoting sustainable development in health, education, and social
welfare.
In its journey, APESEK GIRIMPUHWE remains committed to its founding principles,
striving for a future where every Rwandan child can live with dignity, security, and
hope.
